Once Saved, Always Saved

February 22, 2007 / by hopefields

*This article does not speak of all churches, just some that I have encountered. I am not trying to be rude or argumentative.

I know that this post may leave some feeling upset over the concept of "once saved, always saved," but I truly and genuinely feel that once a person is saved, that's it. The Bible talks about how no one can earn their salvation. Yet, many times, people are seemingly expected to perform in some areas in the church. Sometimes it can be as though church is very competitive, as though it is all about who pays the most tithes, who prays the loudest and longest, who gets slain in the spirit the most etc. While I take the topics of tithing, praying, and the Holy Spirit very seriously, there are some people that view it as somewhat of a contest between themselves and others in the church.

I believe that no one can earn their salvation. It's a free gift from a very loving God. All it requires is a faith and trust in God. There is no contest in which the Christian must play against others. This doesn't mean that just because the Smiths pay $1000 in tithes and the Bakers pay $200 in tithes, that the Smiths get a guaranteed spot in Heaven. It also doesn't mean that the Christian who prays daily is truly any better than the Christian who prays every other day. You see, it is my belief that God loves everyone. He won't make people love him. It is their choice to love and trust in God.

I believe that once a person is saved, they are always saved. A person might come to know Jesus early on in life, or they might come to him later on in life. Either way, I am a firm believer in the fact that God doesn't 'lose' his children. Neither does he strip away someone's faith. I believe that a person can choose whether or not they want to continue to love God or not. However, God knows how to take care of his children. He knows how to love them, provide for them, provide his grace etc.

God doesn't save someone just to let them go, or lose them. There is a scripture in Ephesians that talks about how God rules over everything in this world. He is all-powerful. He is everything. He knows all, sees all, judges all. He is God.

[THUMBUP] well put. God knows all, past, present and future. If someone falls from grace he already knew that would happen. We are his children, just as our children are to us. We don't love our children any less if they go astray.

    I agree, Sherry

#4=earth, #22=a sure witness which equals hopefields.
The fact that someone agrees or disagrees with what you write does not determine who is a friend, nor who is right or wrong. As a Christian, we have common ground in which to conduct ourselves. My hope for hopefields is that truth will be the determining factor in all points.

Can you give one verse of scripture that says, "once saved, always saved?"
How do you show that you have faith in God without some action on your part? What about faithful Abraham, Gen 22:12, (ip) for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thy only son from me.
"Work out your own salvation," Faith without works is dead"
1Cor 10 talks about people who were saved and fell and were destroyed because they did not continue in His grace...Rom 12 gives a warning to those who had recd grace, not to think of themselves more highly than they ought....
According to the scriptures, we are saved from past sins(Rom 3:25),Heb 9:15, 2 Pet 1:9!
Of course, there is Heb chapt 6& chapt 10.
    enjoy the written word,

Everything in life requires action. However, you cannot earn your salvation. Our reactions are just that -- our reactions. No matter what you do, the Bible says that God is the one that even helps us to believe in him in the first place. We cannot do anything to earn our salvation. Whatever actions we take in our faith is due to our love for God, not because if we don't act then he won't save.

He helps us to believe and he is the one that leads us to repent. We don't repent because we are such good people. We repent because he opens our eyes to repent. I stand firm on my belief.

It wouldn't be "Christian" if I didn't care what you believed and why you believe as you do, but I do. So, I asked for a verse of scripture in order to read it for myself. I offered, from scripture, verses to support what I had to say, as we are instructed to do, according to 1Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: :16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

    revelation 3:5
5He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.

I hope maybe these verses will answer your question here.

    John Chapter 10

14 "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[d]; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

    John Chapter 3

5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[c] must be born again.' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

After you are born again....do you have to keep being born again every time you sin? I say no.
If you ask to be saved over and over it's like putting Jesus up on the cross again and again.

16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,[f] that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

If you believe you shall not perish.

    I hope this helps...

I will not come to the level that you are at. You believe in what you do and I believe in what I do. Do not come here and attempt to convert me or change me. I am a Christian and believe in God's grace. Might I suggest that if you don't agree, then don't read my blog. It's pretty simple.

It would be nice to have others at this level, people who trust and believe the written word over what man says concerning The Bible. The Truth will stand regardless of how many believe or who believes, because it is the truth. Examine any of the words I have espoused and you will find truth to be my base. Don't fear my words, but do verify them by the written word, whether they be true as I contend. It's only the truth that will make us all free human being. Free to serve God in Love and Truth.
John chapt 10 & 3 talked about the twelve and one would betray him, but it was the twelve that God gave to Jesus or whom he only lost one, the son of perdition, Judas of Iscariot. Revelation Chapt 3 is summed up when you read Revelation 1:1-3.....Also, two of the miracle that Jesus performed were done on the Samaritan woman and the blind man who had been blind from birth..In both cases, Jesus told them, Go, and sin no more...
We really need to dig deeper into the scriptures which we quote so often to others to see what they are saying, instead of taking "The man of God," word for all that we believe. Everyone that God has sent to proclaim this Gospel are written in scripture, all else are false prophets, etc....Stop applying the word of God to the aid of your flesh and start digesting it for the betterment of your soul,(spirit), because God is spirit and has to whorship in Spirit and Truth.
